Tesla owners search for “tesla charging port cover” more than owners of any other brand — and for good reason: Teslas park outside, charge outside, and their charge ports sit exposed to the same rain, snow and dust as everyone else’s. Which connector does your Tesla use?

The connector standard decides the shape of the port — and therefore the shape of any cover. A cover made for a Type 2 inlet will not seal a NACS port, and vice versa.
Do Teslas really need a port cover?
The charge port door closes over the inlet, but it is not weather-sealed. Dust and condensation still reach the socket over time, and in cold climates the inlet can freeze — the exact scenario that leaves owners unable to insert the charge gun. What to look for in a Tesla cover
- Match the connector, not the badge. Confirm whether your port is NACS, Type 2, or the older proprietary shape before ordering.
- Shallow profile. Tesla ports sit in a recessed housing; the cover must clear the door when closed. A cover designed for a generic port may not fit the recess.
- Snap-fit hold. Tesla’s port door closes tightly, so a cover that holds by friction alone can be pushed out of position. Molded clips hold firm.
- Weather rating. IP67 for outdoor parking, IP54 if the car lives in a garage.
- Tether. Tesla owners charge at Superchargers and public stations — exactly where caps get lost. A tether keeps the cap on the cable.
Can you get a custom-fit Tesla cover?
Yes. If your car’s port recess is unusual — or you want a branded cover for a Tesla accessories business — a factory can tune the profile to the exact housing. A photo of the port and the year/model of the car are enough to start the fit check. Because the NACS standard is still rolling out across manufacturers, custom confirmation is worth doing for any 2023+ North American car.
Choosing between a cover and a gun cover
Two different products get confused here:
- Port cover — protects the inlet when the car is parked and not charging.
- Charging gun/rain cover — protects the handle and connector while the gun is plugged in and charging outdoors.
